For the 18th consecutive year, farm boy-turned-humorist Michael Perry once again nabs the No. 1 spot in our books and in our hearts for his moving accounts of small-town life in America’s heartland in Population: 485, Peaceful Persistence, Forty Acres Deep, and more. Prolific UW-Eau Claire professor and purveyor of all things literary, B.J. Hollars takes second, with recent pubs including Wisconsin for Kennedy and Year of Plenty. The list rounds out with Nickolas Butler, whose latest notable novel, entitled A Forty Year Kiss, hits shelves in February. Congrats to this trio for topping the category since 2016. —Rebecca Mennecke
