What the Best Local Author category lacks in surprises, it more than makes up for in quality. First-place winner Michael Perry has held the top spot since the poll began 14 years ago, riding a long winning streak of nationally recognized books that celebrate local life with nuance, humor, and heart. In second place, BJ Hollars’ workhorse approach continues to produce volumes of work, distilling hard-earned research into captivating stories. In third place, Nick Butler’s three-pack of acclaimed best-selling novels all deserve to be on the big screen. All three writers also write regular newspaper columns: staying sharp and, rather than resting on past accomplishments, always moving forward. –Ken Szymanski
