Founding Stories - Westgate Animal Hospital - EST. 1968

Keeping tails wagging for decades

If there’s one thing all Eau Claire residents can agree on, it’s the love we have for our animals.

Westgate Animal Hospital has been committed to the health of their furry patients since 1968 when Dr. John Flynn, or Doc Flynn, began serving farm animals out of the back of his station wagon and pets in a small building on Clairemont. Esteemed local veterinarians joined Westgate in the 1970s and 1980s.

In the 1990s, Doc Flynn hired Dr. Jay Mettler and opened a new building that is still the current Westgate facility. The beloved Doc Flynn passed away in 2000, and Dr. Mettler became the owner. As the hospital continued to grow, more veterinarians joined the family and created the Westgate we see now. Sadly, Dr. Mettler passed in 2006 and the practice is now owned by Drs. Hansen, Meyer, and Vollendorf with a total of six Veterinarians currently on staff.

The staff is committed to the wellbeing of their patients and their pet parents while continuing the legacy of Doc Flynn.
