Founding Stories - Silver Spring Foods - EST. 1929
Adding zing to your life for generations
V1 Staff |
There are several must-haves during a summer picnic: hotdogs, burgers, buns, and – of course – horseradish. Silver Spring Foods, Inc., a subsidiary of Huntsinger Farms, Inc., is the cream of the crop when it comes to horseradish – literally.
Huntsinger Farms and Silver Spring Foods were founded in 1929 by Ellis Huntsinger. Ellis started growing horseradish on a farm near a freshwater spring south of Eau Claire, and would bottle his horseradish behind his house to sell locally. He soon realized that adding fresh dairy cream to the average horseradish mixture brought the flavors to life in a completely new way.
Now, Silver Spring Horseradish is the No. 1 retail brand for prepared horseradish in the U.S. Huntsinger Farms now cultivates 7,000 acres, and in addition to being the world’s largest grower and processor of horseradish produces corn, soybeans, and other forage crops. Silver Spring Foods and Huntsinger Farms has been family-owned and operated for more than 90 years and across four generations, and they are currently owned by Ellis Huntsinger’s granddaughter and her two sons.
They continue to bring excellent quality products and customer service to the greater Eau Claire area.
