Surf's up, Sheboygan!
Every year Sheboygan plays host to a pretty unique competition - the Dairyland Surf Classic. Yep – Dairyland Surf Classic.
Since the event began in Michigan in 1987 as a small surf contest, it currently gathers surfers from all around the Great Lakes. They get together to take photos and trade battle stories of surf on the other side of the lake. Surfers celebrate and reaffirm that you don’t need an ocean to soar across the waves.
This event is quickly becoming the largest freshwater surfing competition in the world. People normally think surf spots include the monster waves off Maui, but right here in Wisconsin during peak conditions the Sheboygan shores reach 20 feet high.
This year, the four-day competition is set for September 2, but registration began in June. The event will be held at Deland Park, and include individual and group competitions. Music, raffles and door prizes will be held all day.
