Lake Wissota State Park To Host Candlelight Stroll For All Ages
savor the snow-covered trails with a calm and cozy walk amongst the warm glow of candles, coordinated by Friends of Lake Wissota State Park
While many of us Chippewa Vallians can get behind the joys of sharpening our skates and waxing our skis for the next season of winter adventures, there’s something calm and soothing about walking in the woods at dusk with a fresh layer of snow underfoot. Luckily for us, this calm can be experienced with the soft glow of candlelight at an area park.
Lake Wissota State Park (18127 Co Hwy O, Chippewa Falls) will host its annual “Lake Wissota State Park Candlelight Event” from 5:30-7:30pm on Feb. 1, 2026.
Nathan Fries, the park manager for Lake Wissota State Park, said the event serves as a family-friendly offering to get locals out on the park's trails, who have perhaps never been before.
Two different candlelit trails will be available at the event: one designated for Nordic skiers and a separate path for snowshoers and pedestrians, Fries said.
“We have around 20 miles of trails with lots of different uses,” Fries said. “The main goal is to get people out in the winter, to enjoy the winter trail system we have at Lake Wissota State Park.”
The Friends of Lake Wissota State Park coordinate the event each year and help to organize volunteers, campfire stations and warm drinks for participants to enjoy before and after the self-guided hikes. Fries encourages attendees to bring their own provisions for roasting marshmallows, hot dogs, popcorn and more.
Vehicle admission to the park is required to enter and participate ($13/vehicle with Wisconsin license plates, $16/vehicle for all out-of-state plates). Unfortunately, your pups will have to sit this one out and cozy up at home, as pets are not allowed on the candlelit trail.
Mark your calendars – and remember to dress accordingly – for this local winter tradition, and enjoy the candle-lit transformation of the Lake Wissota State Park landscape.
