The Chippewa Valley LGBTQ+ Center has an ongoing snail mail program that allows interested folks from across the Valley to connect with one another. In a communication style often forgotten, the enjoyable aspect of putting pen to paper and sending off a letter into the world for an excited participant will never get old — no matter the convenience of snail mail’s electronic alternative.

“As much as I hate to say (the start of this program) had something to do with COVID, it had something to do with COVID,” At-Large Board member with CVLGBTQ+ Community Center, Matt Klein, laughed.

With no prerequisites to participate, this program’s main focus is providing an open and safe space to create new connections. “Participants are encouraged to reach out to someone based on the description they think would be a fun person to write to,” Klein said. “We don’t match people up with each other. It’s very organic.”

Whether you reveal your identity or not, send a letter once a week or once a year, this program accommodates anyone interested in getting involved no matter their background. “Ideally, this program serves to connect people to one another and to push back against isolation that people might feel,” Klein said.

“Any program that helps people find community is one that benefits the Valley,” Klein stated. “... Despite all our technology, sometimes you just like to see a letter in the mailbox!”
