If you have a pet, chances are the photo gallery on your phone contains a lot of photos of them! And, probably a lot of blurry ones. Or black blobs if you have a dark dog.  Here are some tips to make those photos as amazing as the pets that are in them!

1. GO WHERE THE LIGHT IS

You need a high shutter speed to get a photo of a wiggly subject that isn’t blurry. The more light there is, the higher shutter speed your phone will select. If you need to shoot in low light, this is not the time for action shots. The pet needs to be as still as possible. Try to brace the phone on a non-moving surface to hold it steady.

2. GET LOW

Dogs are short; get down to their level to get a super flattering, straight-on image instead of always shooting down at them.

3. GET CLOSE

Focus on the eyes for a beautiful connection to the soul and eliminate cluttered background. Try your phone’s portrait mode to get the gorgeous creamy backgrounds the pros get.

4. CAPTURE THOSE EARS

Perky ears go along with a great expression. Noises can be magical for getting a dog to look directly at you and giving an adorable head tilt.  But they lose their impact quickly, so wait until you are ready and don’t wear them out. I love a duck call or a squeaker, but your voice works wonders, too. Try high pitched, low pitched, meow … the sillier you feel, the more personality you’re going to get out of your pet!

5. USE TREATS

It’s hard work being a supermodel! Treats can keep your pet’s interest, help a shy dog overcome their fears, and tame a wild child who didn’t want to sit.

6. LIGHTEN UP THOSE SHADOWS

You’re in good light, and you still end up with a dark blob?  Don’t despair!  Most phone cameras have simple editing capabilities. Look for a “shadows” function, and lighten up the image a bit to bring back the detail.

7. HAVE FUN

You don’t need a perfect photo – you want an image that screams, “This is you” about your pet.  If you are getting stressed and upset, your pet is going to be stressed and upset. Relax, and let their personality shine through!
