Beginning this fall, the YMCA of the Chippewa Valley will offer a new program designed to empower individuals living with Parkinson’s Disease: Pedaling for Parkinson’s™.

The initiative will provide Parkinson’s patients and their caregivers the opportunity to engage in forced exercise on a bicycle. The program will run for eight weeks, meeting twice per week at varying dates/times depending on which YMCA location it is taking place.

“The Pedaling for Parkinson’s™ initiative is based on compelling research that demonstrates the potential of forced exercise to alleviate up to 35% of Parkinson’s-related symptoms when participants ride three days a week over an eight-week period,” a recent media release stated. “This program is designed to offer more than just physical benefits; it fosters a supportive group setting that emphasizes education and holistic wellness.”

The program sessions are scheduled as follows:

  • Eau Claire South YMCA: Oct. 1-Nov. 21, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9am-10am
  • Eau Claire Downtown YMCA: Sept. 30-Nov. 20, Mondays and Wednesdays, 1-2pm
  • Chippewa Falls YMCA: Sept. 30-Nov. 20, Mondays and Wednesdays, 10:30-11:30am

The program will be open to Parkinson’s patients and their caregivers at no cost. The YMCA is also granting participants a complimentary one-year family membership to the YMCA of the Chippewa Valley.

“This initiative not only provides an opportunity for physical improvement but also for building a supportive community among those facing similar challenges,” the media release said.
