With spring just around the corner, residents in the Historic Randall Park Neighborhood might find a new community garden sprouting up near Lakeshore Elementary School. A partnership of citizens will seek support for the project from the Historic Randall Park Neighborhood Association at 6:30pm on March 14 at Lakeshore. Garden proponents needs the support of the neighborhood association, which would run the garden, since the association has the means to sign a lease with the city for the site. They also have the help of AmeriCorps VISTA horticulture program assistant Kerri Kiernan. According to Kiernan, it’s easy to start a community garden but it can be a struggle to sustain it, and that’s where she comes in. She has structured a new model where the garden will start with only a small section of about 15 individual rental plots the first year. Because the spot – just west of a former skating rink site near Lakeshore Pavillion – is in a neighborhood of renters and permanent residents, Kiernan foresees a great mixture of people using the garden, growing anything from kitchen herbs to vegetables to flowers. “It’s a unique way to build bridges in the community,” she added. If the neighborhood association gives its OK, the issue may be discussed by the City Council on March 26. A groundbreaking volunteer day is planned for April 27.
