With the final two of three large solar arrays officially installed at the new Highway, DHS Government Center, and Agricultural Center in Eau Claire County as of late June, the County is working its way through a series of renewable energy initiatives that were approved in 2021 and 2023.

The solar installations – totaling 204kW of power production and projected to avoid 198 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually – align with the County’s objectives for long-term economic and environmental benefits, including its ambitious 2050 goal of operating with 100% renewable energy.

The project was funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and a grant from the Office of Energy Innovation. Local solar installation business Next Step Energy completed the installations.

“Eau Claire County’s investment in solar energy reflects a balanced approach that considers both environmental concerns and fiscal realities,” said County Recycling and Sustainability Coordinator Regan Watts. “By exploring renewable energy options while prioritizing financial sustainability, the County aims to ensure a prosperous future for all residents.”

Previous notable projects also working on County energy efficiency measures include: Replacing all interior and exterior lighting fixtures with LED; upgrading steam boilers to high-efficiency hot water boilers; Replacing pneumatic HVAC controls/compressors with direct digital controls; and more.
