If your New Year’s resolutions include taking better care of the planet, you can start right in your own kitchen and backyard: The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources estimates that 30% of the waste that ends up in landfills could be composted instead.

Now through Jan. 26, Eau Claire County is offering a sale on home composter bins and stainless steel kitchen pails. Bins will be $57 while kitchen pails are available for $21. Bins will be available for pickup on Saturday, May 4, between 8am and noon in Barn C at the Eau Claire County Expo Center (5530 Fairview Drive, Eau Claire). And if you miss the order deadline, you may be in luck: A small number of bins will be available on the day of the sale on a first-come basis.

The sale is open to everyone, not just Eau Claire County residents. During last year’s event, more than 300 bins were sold, and the county hopes to serve even more households this year.
