Let your freak flag fly at the Freak 5K

Allison Schrader

Now you can finally combine your love of physical exertion, music, and socializing at this year’s Freak 5K in Chippewa Falls (August 27). The 20+ obstacles placed throughout the race will be sure to keep things interesting for both the runners and the observers. Members of the military, law enforcement, and fire department are encouraged to sign up for the Freak Team Tactical, a side competition. The Freak Kids Kilo will give youngsters a chance to participate in the fun, too.

The Freak 5K is a sweet idea, but not the only one of its kind. Mixing physical fitness with a festival-like atmosphere has been a recent trend in these parts. The Warrior Dash, an insane obstacle course complete with mud pits and pyromania, has sprawled its way across the country. The Minnesota Warrior Dash will take place on July 23 and 24 in Afton Alps on over 3 miles of harsh terrain. It may be a bit more extreme in comparison to the Freak 5K, but the concepts are similar: let’s run, listen to good music, and have fun.

Registration fees for the Freak 5K are $20 for children under 5, $65 for adults, and $50 for the Freak Team Tactical. A portion of the proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society to support the fight against breast cancer.
