Prepare to get your “freak on” at this debut Warrior Dash-style event. Beginning near Irvine Park at noon, the Freak 5k was created by Fit Elite of Eau Claire, a workout facility on Mall Drive. It’s just like any other 5K race … except the whole course is littered with obstacles! Obstacles include mud/water holes to wade through, structures and hills to climb … you get the idea. Prizes will be awarded based on age divisions as well as winners in the Freak Kids’ Kilo and Team Tactical categories. The Freak Kids’ Kilo is a one-mile course with its own obstacles to conquer for ages 7 to 13. The Team Tactical category is for military, law enforcement, and fire department members. Teams must consist of at least five racers, each of whom will compete on the regular 5K course, but the top five times from each team will be added to determine the team’s time. The other part of this event that can get a bit “freaky” is the variety of costumes. Competitors may wear whatever they choose, provided its PG-13. A warning to those participating: your clothes WILL get dirty. There will be an area to rinse off after the race, but a change of clothes is recommended, especially if you intend to stay for the post-race festivities. During and after the race, refreshments will be available for sale and local country band The Big Backyard will be performing. Registration forms, waivers, and more information can be found at freak5k.com.
