It seems like a no-brainer: A great leader isn’t made overnight. In fact, Michelle Von Ruden would argue that a true leader is committed to continuous learning and personal improvement – but more often than not, when she asks clients to identify the last time they invested in themselves and their leadership skills, they don’t know.

Michelle has been practicing leadership her entire life, starting as a kid growing up in a military family to taking her education further by gaining her master’s in business administration (MBA) from the University of Kansas with a focus in Management & Leadership.

“I had the privilege of going to a SHRM conference in Illinois a few years ago, and that’s where I realized people were actually “coaching & consulting on leadership” as a job role,” Michelle said. “I came home from that conference and had a conversation with my husband, Mike, about it. He said, ‘That is so you – you should do that.’ ”

She couldn’t shake her passion for leadership. Armed with over 15 years of workplace experience and a master’s degree, Michelle registered her company with the state of Wisconsin: Von Ruden Coaching and Consulting LLC was born. Continuing to hone her expertise, Michelle earned her Maxwell Leadership certification a few months later.

Leadership can feel like an intangible ability, but with Von Ruden Consulting & Coaching's range of methods and activities, it becomes a teachable skill.

Michelle works with both individual and corporate clients, identifying pain points a team may be encountering and what goals they can work towards. It sounds simple, but as she explained, every situation is unique and requires a custom plan of action.

“For individuals, it comes down to one-on-one coaching and leadership development,” she said. “Whether it’s someone new entering an industry who wants to be a leader or someone who has been working, hanging out in the background for awhile, and is ready to take that step forward. Imagine already having those skills by the time you land that leadership role.”

“For my business clients, I identify what types of challenges a team is facing. Whether it’s how to motivate others; how to better equip your staff; how to delegate and manage your own time; and more,” she said.

Leadership can feel like an intangible ability, but with Von Ruden Consulting & Coaching’s range of methods and activities, it becomes a teachable skill. Beyond the knowledge and skills that can be applied toward bettering one’s leadership ability, is mindset and behavior.

Michelle uses a holistic approach to coaching and consulting and enforces the idea that self-awareness and self-reflection are the starting points to building leadership skills. “You have to be able to lead yourself first,” she said. “You should be willing to invest in and take that time for yourself. That work will be reflected in your career, to your peers, and in your everyday life.”

Von Ruden Coaching & Consulting’s work is not specific to any one career path or type of business; Locally, some of her clients have included the Menomonie Area Chamber of Commerce, AMK Cleaning Services, and Bill’s Distributing.

“We continue to book and rebook (with Michelle and Von Ruden Coaching and Consulting) because of the variety of topics she has on leadership and inspiration for building great teams,” Ashley Bender, owner of AMK Cleaning Services, said. “Michelle comes with an extensive background and training in managing teams, building cultures, and how that impacts a business.”

Shellee Pechmiller, Bill’s Distributing Human Resources Manager, said Michelle led several training sessions for the business’s core management team that ultimately helped them grow as leaders and bettered their communication. Plus, she worked around our schedules. “(Michelle) was very knowledgeable and made the classes engaging. She also worked with us to do 4 classes that were 1.5 hours in length versus a full day of training,” Shellee said.
