If you have used Northwestern Bank at all over the past 45 years, you’re likely to recognize local Gerald (Jerry) Jacobson. After more than 45 years of service at the Chippewa Falls-based institution and countless hours of volunteerism on behalf of the community, Jacobson was recently inducted into the Leaders in Banking Excellence installation at the Wisconsin Bankers Association headquarters in Madison.

Jacobson is now one of 27 profiles included in the WBA Leaders in Banking Excellence. “This designation reflects the highest standard of excellence – both in helping to shape our industry and in serving our Wisconsin communities,” said Rose Oswald Poels, WBA president and CEO.

Jacobson first joined Northwestern Bank in 1978, progressing through roles as an auditor, cashier, executive vice president, and president, a position he assumed in 1998 and has remained in ever since. He is known and recognized for his leadership style: one that emphasizes personal connections with staff and fostering their professional growth, demonstrated by his daily interactions with employees and regular visits to all Northwestern bank locations.

Equally, if not more, impressive, is Jacobson’s extensive civic engagement history. He has volunteered with over two dozen community organizations, including Blugold Beginnings; Eau Claire Confluence Arts Inc.; Junior Achievement; and the YMCA. His encouragement of volunteerism has inspired Northwestern Bank’s employees to contribute about 1,600 hours annually to community organizations.

Under Jacobson’s guidance, Northwestern bank’s assets grew from $150 million to $700 million and net income increased from $2 million to $10 million. He has advocated for the banking industry and has served on various boards, including those of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, Community Bankers of Wisconsin, and WBA. He was also honored as the 2023 WBA Banker of the Year.

WBA hosted a celebration on Aug. 16, unveiling three new plaques on the Leaders in Banking installation which also included William Censky (Investors Community Bank, Manitowoc) and Thomas Pampering (Premier Community Bank, Marion) alongside Jacobson.
