You’ve heard it before, and you’ll certainly keep hearing it – especially from us at Volume One: Shop local. Heck, you can even drink local, and put your money back into Wisconsin thanks to the plethora of breweries and distilleries that make the Badger State their home. Here are a handful of Wisconsin-made spirits to create your own cocktails with this holiday season:
Central Standard Craft Distillery
Based in: Milwaukee
Recently celebrating its 10th anniversary, Central Standard was born thanks to two friends and a bottle of bourbon (where all the best ideas come from, really). Specializing in bourbon and whiskey, Central Standard is a small batch craft distillery that doesn’t just talk the talk. Their award-winning spirits have earned them a serious reputation across the state, and their continued innovation proves they walk the walk: They recently launched the very first Wisconsin-made bourbon cream liquor, made with Door County cherries and local apples; earlier this year, the distillery partnered with Leinenkugel’s to release ready-to-drink canned Old Fashioned; its global Brewmasters Series; and more.
The Local Store carries the following Central Standard products: Ready-to-drink canned collaborations with Leinenkugel’s; Jarred bourbon cherries; North Chocolate Brandy; Red Cabin Bourbon; and Ready-to-drink Rocket Pop cocktail.
Driftless Glen
Based in: Baraboo
This distillery’s namesake was inspired by the very region it gets its water from: The Driftless Region. Driftless Glen’s bourbon and rye is revered as second to none for a lot of folks and uses a one-of-a-kind pot still alongside its 44-foot tall column still. With more than 50 awards and accolades over its 10-year history, the Baraboo distillery takes its operation seriously – and is seriously intentional. Every craft batch produces 100 bushels of spent grain – which they deliver to local farmers to feed their livestock. The distillery describes the process as “grain to glass to farm,” in true Midwestern fashion.
The Local Store carries the following Driftless Glen products: Driftless Glen Bourbon; Driftless Glen Cranberry Vodka; Driftless Glen Double Cask Gin; Driftless Glen Vodka; and WisconGin.
Eagle Park Brewing & Distilling
Based in: Milwaukee
Dedicated to the craft beer and liquor industry, Eagle Park was founded by two beer-lovin’ brothers in their parent’s garage. When Eagle Park began in 2017, they couldn’t have known their quick success: In 2023, the brewery made its 10 millionth beer; Today, Eagle Park Brewing also offers spirits, a move made in 2024: Distilled at the brewery’s second location – a customer-facing brewery, distillery, tasting room, restaurant, and private event space – in Muskego (which opened after the business acquired Milwaukee Brewing Company), Eagle Park offers bourbon, rum, vodka, brandy, and gin. Already, Eagle Park’s vodka was dubbed one of the best craft vodkas by the American Distilling Institute.
The Local Store carries the following Eagle Park products: Eagle Park Distilling Gin and Eagle Park Distilling Straight Bourbon Whiskey.
Kurvball BBQ Whiskey
Based in: Pewaukee
It’s exactly what it sounds like: barbecue-flavored whiskey. The first of its kind, Kurvball BBQ Whiskey sits at 34% ABV (68 proof), and makes a mean BBQ Bloody Mary. Also tasty in marinades and sauces, it aims to be the liquor “for pre-gaming with friends,” enjoyed as a Smoked BBQ Old Fashioned or just over ice. Made in Wisconsin and available in all 50 states, this might be the most fun liquor you ever try.
The Local Store carries the following Kurvball products: Kurvball BBQ Whiskey (750ml) and mini Kurvball BBQ Whiskey (50ml).
Lasdon Vermouth
Based in: Milwaukee
Lasdon Vermouth is Wisconsin made, through and through. Co-founded by Wisconsinites – including one Eau Claire native, Ben Proctor – and launched in 2021, the vermouth use a La Crosse variety of wine as its base, and is packaged by Central Standard Distillery in Milwaukee. The small batch, dry vermouth is made further unique thanks to its packaging: six-packs of two-ounce bottles, something practically unheard of for vermouth. The company recently released its second product, Sweet Vermouth, as well, and is available in both 750mL bottles and its six-pack. Recognized by Forbes, it’s only up from here for the young company.
The Local Store carries Lasdon Vermouth Dry (750mL).
Trumie’s
Based in: Chippewa Falls
I would never make a round-up of Wisco-made liquors without mentioning Trumie’s, c’mon! Created and still distilled at the Chippewa River Distillery in Chippewa Falls, Trumie’s vodka absolutely nails its dozens of vodka varieties. Named after Trumie Schneider, longtime owner of the former Trumie’s Bar, Trumie’s is an award-winning vodka several times over: from its original handcrafted vodka to its Dill, Garlic, and Espresso varieties. Trumie’s also crafts Jalapeño Habanero, Sweet Black Tea, Bacon, Apple Pie vodkas, and more – seriously, the range speaks for itself.
The Local Store carries the following Trumie’s products: Trumie’s Bacon Vodka; Trumie’s Blueberry Vodka; Trumie’s Dill Vodka; Trumie’s Garlic Vodka; and Trumie’s Horseradish Vodka.
45th Parallel Distillery
Based in: New Richmond
This family-owned craft distillery first broke ground over in New Richmond in 2006, releasing its 45th Parallel Vodka in 2007. Since then, the distillery has expanded its offerings, opened to the public, and grew to include a second location and event center. Its product lineup includes bourbon, whiskey, vodka, gin, limoncello and orange cello, and more. The distillery began as one of just 50 craft distilleries in the entire country, and today, continues to grow and innovate as an award-winning distillery using 100% locally-sourced corn.
The Local Store carries the following 45th Parallel products: 45th Parallel Midwest Gin; 45th Parallel Midwest Vodka; and 45th Parallel Rye 100.
