The Family Fabric of GEMco Surfaces
for the family behind GEMco, excellence is a promise
More than 20 years after getting its start in a barn in rural Colfax, GEMco Surfaces is now a tried-and-true, top-notch countertop company offering the kind of bathroom and kitchen surfaces that turn your dreams into reality. The first luxury Cambria USA Showroom in Wisconsin, GEMco's showroom in River Prairie, Altoona, is a physical representation of the family business's commitment to excellence.
Ron and Karen Halvorson owned and operated a cultured marble sink manufacturing company from 1982-1998, that business leading to the partnership between Ron and Scott Maes in 1999 that created Viking Surfaces (formerly Viking Sink Company), until Ron’s retirement in 2007.
Since then, Scott and Malayna Maes have embodied that entrepreneurial spirit day in and day out, building GEMco into the trusted company it is today. Their kids, Gabe and Emma, not only grew up as part of the family business, but continue to be today.
For the close-knit family behind GEMco, it's more than a business – it’s a part of the family fabric. In fact, they’re the very reasons behind the Gemco name: Gabe, Emma, and Malayna make up the first three letters of it: GEMco Surfaces.
That family-centered, people-first mentality is what sets GEMco apart from the rest. From free interior design consulting and project guidance to the inclusion of product, measurement, and installation in pricing, GEMco aims to ensure every aspect of the home improvement journey is seamless and stress-free.
Gabe and Emma grew up seeing the kind of leadership and drive it takes to successfully run a business, and today, the duo offer their marketing skills, work with Information Technology, and installation support while Scott oversees the entire operation, Malayna providing management and human resources support.
“The parent company started before I was born, so it’s been a part of my life for as long as I can remember,” Emma said. “The most integral part of our family business has been the people that have come along with it. There are a handful of employees who have been through this journey with my dad since the beginning, and I see many of them as family.”
