THE PERFECT PICK: Picking Promises Connects Farms to Those in Need
the growing organization tackles food insecurity, one pint and bushel at a time
Picking Promises, a venture that tackles food insecurity by connecting local growers and food distribution organizations, is now in its second year.
Norman Joseph, the founder of Picking Promises, organizes “picks” at local orchards and farms like Connell’s Family Orchard in Chippewa Falls and Blueberry Ridge Orchard in Eau Claire. Volunteers show up at these picking events, pay for the produce they pick, and then drop it off at agencies like Meals on Wheels and Feed My People Food Bank.
While these efforts bring fresh produce to those who may not be able to afford it, the growers benefit as well. Picking Promises helps reduce any wasted produce, and volunteers can offer to weed while they are picking.
Picking Promises is going strong this year, something Joseph credits to media and word-of-mouth coverage. He’s also been in touch with church and youth groups south of Wisconsin, where growing seasons are longer, to encourage other areas to start their own Picking Promises.
Anyone who can’t make it to an organized picking event can still help. Picking Promises’ website gives step-by-step instructions on how to pick, store, and donate produce. Fresh fruits and vegetables can spoil quickly, so volunteers are encouraged to contact their desired charity in advance to arrange drop-off.
