People here really love their local history. I have to imagine that’s true many places, but it sure seems like the Chippewa Valley citizenry might love to talk about the past a bit more than most. Especially former local businesses. With that in mind and the holidays on the way, we had an idea to launch a new series of limited-edition, vintage-inspired T-shirts at The Local Store featuring the logos of famous former businesses we all knew and loved. We’re calling the series “Local Legends.” With plenty of ideas in the hopper, we limited the initial offering to nine designs and left it up to online readers to vote for which three tees we should make to launch the series. They included London Square Mall, Video Vistas, Kerm’s Super Foods, Eau Claire Cycle Shop, Chicken Unlimited, Cassidy’s Super Store, Samuelson’s, Wally’s Chalet, and Woos Pagoda. But we also asked for additional ideas for future rounds, and boy did they come rolling in. We had nearly 1,000 people vote in just the first 48 hours. And there may still be time to vote. Visit VolumeOne.org/legends to check them out and leave your ideas for the next round. We’ll likely announce the winners in The Local Store’s holiday catalog, due out in the Nov. 13 issue of Volume One, and we’ll add a couple of new tees to the series each year going forward. It’s a fun way to celebrate local history, and to put your old-school townie pride right on your chest.
