"She never doubted that magic is all around us, whether or not we can see it," Siri Undlin, the vocalist and songwriter of Humbird, shared this wisdom with listeners during the second night of the ensemble's residency with the Pablo Center at the Confluence (128 Graham Ave., Eau Claire).
Throughout the month of November, Humbird has reimagined its former "Backyard Fairytales" series for viewers in the Chippewa Valley. The core ensemble throughout the music residency consists of Shane Leonard (percussion, mixing) and Pat Keen (bass) — the addition of special guests including Sarah Elstran (The Nunnery), Courtney Hartman and Nate LeBrun.
Undlin's fairytale and folklore stories — each unique to the three residency shows — draw inspiration from life lessons and traditional narratives shared by mentors, storytellers, among others. Her tales explore themes of caregiving, luck, humor and longing, often featuring European mythical beings which transcend time and space.
Both Humbird's ensemble and the Pablo Center staff have transformed the Manz Green Room into a setting which transports viewers into the fairytales Undlin shares. Jacquelyn Beaupré, a regional mixed-media artisan, has further instilled this whimsy throughout the reimagined venue with illustrated fairytale landscapes including hand-painted murals — depicting small scenes from the folklore shared during the residency — along with paper lanterns and repurposed fabric garlands.
In theme, Pablo Center's Artmobile program will continue to offer a "Design a Fairy Fit" interactive activity; guests of all ages can decorate their own fairy with leaves, buttons, sequins and personalize their own set of wings during the show.
Along the way, Humbird has given listeners teasers to new music in the works along with fan favorites from the group's most recent release, Right On.
Humbird's Musican-In-Residence with the Pablo Center will conclude on Friday, Nov. 21, with more special guests and new stories to be unveiled.
