A one-night performance of Shadowlands, the improvisational and contemporary-jazz project of Sean Carey (S.Carey) and John Raymond, was held on Oct. 3 at the Pablo Center at the Confluence (128 Graham Ave.) in downtown Eau Claire.

The duo, joined by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble 1, transformed the JAMF Theater into a “big band collaboration,”where each of the ten tracks on the project's self-titled record, Shadowlands, were reimagined through new musical arrangements.

With the support of faculty and staff through the UW-Eau Claire music and theater arts department, attendees of the performance witnessed new compositions of “Blood Orange,” “Morning Prayer,” “New Meaning” and additional surprise improvisations throughout the evening. John R. Stewart, professor of music and director of concert bands at UW-Eau Claire, led the ensemble through the setlist.

Accompanying the university big band, Carey and Raymond, was Eau Claire instrumentalist Sarah Elstran (The Nunnery), Romain Collin (piano) and other longtime collaborators who were along for the ride for the ongoing Shadowlands fall tour.

“One of my favorite parts of the whole Shadowlands (project) is the community that has been built around the music,” Raymond shared.
