The season of sniffling, sneezing, and snot is upon us. With more awareness and attention being brought to the natural healing “trend,” what alternatives do parents who want to avoid chemicals in common cold medications have for soothing colds at home?

“The best way to prevent a cold or flu is through maintenance of the body.” – Dr. Michael Court, Chippewa Valley Health & Wellness

Dr. Michael Court, a naturopathic doctor with 26 years experience; Dr. Daniel Czelatdko, a nutrition specialist in the field of chiropractic with 24 years experience; and Debbie Koteras, owner of Mother Nature Foods, who has more than 45 years in business, all agree that prevention is key. “The best way to prevent a cold or the flu is through maintenance of the body with regular chiropractic care and the food that goes into our body,” Court said. Czelatdko adds, “Regular exercise, keeping your stress under control, being mindful of sugar intake, getting plenty of sleep and drinking lots of water.” Koteras also suggests taking fish oil and Vitamin D, as well as a probiotic since “so much starts in our gut.”

Even with doing all you can to prevent you and your children from getting sick, your little one will come home from school with some macaroni art and a runny nose. “Even though you may get a cold or the flu, there are ways to manage or deal with symptoms through natural ways that are of benefit to the body,” Czelatdko said. He warns that the dangers of chemicals found in common cold medications include gastrointestinal side effects, stress on the liver and kidneys, and may lead to increased infection. Instead, Court suggests using Echinacea, “but use the whole plant. You know it’s pure if you put it on your tongue and it makes your tongue numb.” He also suggests using Andrographix in tablet form for respiratory symptoms.

Koteras agrees: “Don’t look for a pill to do a quick fix. Taking our health into our own hands is so important.” She adds that using Goldenseal, Elderberry, and Vitamin C are all beneficial in alleviating cold and flu symptoms. For little ones who can’t swallow a pill, these can be found in gummy, powder, and dissolvable forms.

When navigating your natural journey, Court encourages people to “seek health care providers to help educate you; don’t rely on the Internet.” And of course, see a doctor for any persistent medical concerns.
