Known for its dragon-esque physique, a whiplike tail, razor sharp claws, and ridiculously huge fangs, the Hodag is also known as one of Wisconsin’s most notorious “monsters.” The Hodag is said to reside in Northeastern, Wisconsin near the non-mythical city of Rhinelander. Eyewitnesses, as early as the late 1800s, have reported the Hodag as having “glowing eyes” and fowl breath. Local tales also describe the monster as being extremely challenging to kill. Difficulties aside, it was reported that a Hodag was captured and killed in 1896.

More than 100 years after its very first recorded sighting, suspicious happenings in the area leave locals believing that a Hodag still lumbers around the woods. The creature is a source of pride in Rhinelander, and its even the local High School’s mascot. (What a costume!) And, with an annual fair dedicated to the monster’s existence, it’s obvious the Hodag has truly become part of Wisconsin’s folkloric culture.
