Eau Claire is one step closer to having a partly crowdsourced plaza built on the spot of the Haymarket Parking Lot.

On Tuesday Aug. 13 the City Council approved a resolution that would give the West Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission the go-ahead to engage in Placemaking The Plaza public meetings to give the area a makeover. The resolution passed 7-4. The Placemaking The Plaza initiative would use the Power Of 10 theory in order to garner public input on what the community would want to see in the public space.

On Monday night's Council meeting, some councilmembers were skeptical of the resolution. The plaza in question would be at the center of the proposed Confluence Project – an arts and multiuse facility that is still seeking approval – and some members thought it best to wait and see what happens before approving the public aspect of Placemaking The Plaza.

The initiative has already garnered financial support through a Power2Give campaign and matching donations from corporate partners including Market & Johnson – one of the developers involved in the Confluence Project.

From here WCWRPC will organize the public input sessions to bring the community in and discuss the space. You can find more info on that or sign up for updates at their website.
