Spinning our way to a greener future
In an encouraging effort to go green, UW-Eau Claire has just innovated a way for students to exercise and save the environment ... at the same time. Multi-tasking at its finest. And they are the first public university to do so. Good job, guys!
Here’s the deal. Indoor bicycles, typically used for hour-long spinning classes offered at the university, will soon operate using technology that creates energy as people are exercising. This means that if a class has 20 spinners, they could create enough energy to power 120 fluorescent light bulbs for an hour. Or power two laptops, depending on how you spend your time.
Al Wiberg, of the University Recreation & Sport Facilities, believes this “exciting endeavor” to be the perfect way to “help the environment while also promoting health and fitness.”
Not only do the spear-headers of this project feel it’s a great way to promote awareness and healthier lifestyles among the campus’ student body, they are also excited about the school’s dedication to reducing their overall carbon footprint.
And it’s all cool and futuristic, you know? So although we’re not all flying around in our trash-powered, zero emission compact cars (yet), we can at least spin our way to a greener future.
