Although there are bars on every corner in Eau Claire, not everyone is 21. For those under 20, it might seem like there are no alcohol-free places to hang out. But for those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning or LGBTQ-allies, and are between the ages of 13 to 20, there is a welcoming place at the LGBT Community Center of the Chippewa Valley.

The Center, located at 510 S. Farwell Street, is a place where LGBTQ people and allies can go to make new friends, get involved with the community, and relax without being judged.

Although the Center is open to people of any age, there is a special youth group that takes place every Thursday night, from 7 to 9 p.m., where kids from the ages of 13 to 20 can drop in and socialize with other kids in a friendly environment.

“The youth group is important because our youth are the future of the community,” said Jessica Janiuk, the Vice President of the Center, and one of the four group facilitators on Thursday nights.

During their two-hour group time, the group discusses a range of topics, from school and family life, to depictions of LGBTQ people in the media, Janiuk said.

“The Center helps in providing that safe space for them to be themselves” Janiuk said.
