So I have to eat my words a bit. A month or two back, I wrote a short note in the magazine chastising area movie theaters for their pathetic performance in getting buzz-worthy, critically-acclaimed films to our market, and instead continuing to spoon feed us unoriginal star-centered crap. Well, almost immediately after that was published, things really started turning around. And yes, I realize it probably had nothing to do with me. Not only did Carmike announce a series of art and indie films (which is a really cool idea though probably doomed), but suddenly all the quality titles major markets had been enjoying for the last several months started flowing in. Stuff like Frost/Nixon and Slumdog Millionaire and Rachel Getting Married. It's rumored Milk is coming next week, and The Wrestler (pictured above) just opened at Oakwood this weekend (and though at first glance it might seem iffy, it's absolutely not, look into it). So after a significant dry spell, there's reason to hit the theaters again. I’ve been able to catch several (saw Milk in NYC in December), and I strongly encourage you to get your butts out there and check them out. They’re all very different, and all very worth it.
