TAVEN HATLELI

Soccer

North High School

Kickin’ since about age 4, taven has played nearly every position on the field and has chased the rush of competition for years.

In fact, his love of the game took him out of his original school district, Elk Mound, in middle school: He enrolled in the Eau Claire district in order to continue playing soccer in high school.

“It was definitely difficult to switch schools like that, but ultimately soccer was the most important thing to me,” Taven said. “Whether I liked it or not, if I wanted to play in high school, it was a serious consideration. Obviously I did go to Northstar and then North (High School), and it paid off.”

While he joined North High’s varsity soccer team in his freshman year, Taven said his breakout years were the final two of high school. He started playing indoor soccer as a sophomore in order to maximize his playing time year-round, taking on club soccer and various leagues and tournaments, too. In fact, last year he was the youngest player on the Eau Claire Bateaux, a communtiy soccer team.

Outside of school and after-school practice (which runs until about 6pm five days a week), weight lifting on Wednesdays and Fridays, and several games a week, Taven has also enjoyed coaching youth teams.

“I wanted to be able to look at the game from a coaching view to increase my own skill on the field and ability to make smarter decisions during games.”

The life skills he’s taken away from being a student athlete are the highlight of it all. “I love everything about soccer – the combination of aggressiveness and speed, and competition – but of course, it’s also been hard. That’s why dedication and perseverance is so important.”
