SAMMY HAS BEEN PLAYING SPORTS FOR MORE THAN HALF OF HER LIFE, AND BASKETBALL FOR AS LONG AS SHE CAN REMEMBER.
“Even before I was officially on a team, I always had a ball,” she said. “But basketball has always been the sport that’s stuck with me. The sport itself is the most enjoyable to me, but it’s really the competition and energy. It’s like no other sport I’ve played.”
That love for the game has taken Sammy and the Menomonie Mustangs far, including a state-qualifying run in 2022, making sectional finals in 2022 and 2023, and taking regional championships in 2022 and 2023.
Sammy does more than play hoops: She is a high-achieving multi-sport student athlete who was a Big Rivers champion in tennis (2023) and has been a varsity athlete in both soccer and track and field. But her coaches respect her most for the kind of teammate and leader she is.
Alongside the team, Sammy has helped coach younger players during summer camps and skills practices. Outside of in-season practice five days a week, Sammy said off-season work is a major factor in her success.
“Getting to something like state championships, that’s because of all the off-season work,” she said. “If I’m going to the gym and working on myself, I want the rest of the team there with me getting better because that’s the only way we reach our goal, is together.”
Playing for Menomonie High has far exceeded her expectations, she said, as both a student athlete and generally. “Playing for Menomonie has been like nothing I could’ve imagined. I haven’t just learned how to play basketball. I’ve learned how to be a leader, how to communicate with others, and on my time management skills. It’s so much more than sports abilities.”
