Something old, something new, and something to scratch your rock ’n’ roll itch.

Twin Cities-based rockers Pullstring just dropped their sophomore full-length album, Out with the Old, an 11-song effort comprised of re-recorded legacy tracks and newly composed originals primed to insert a shot of energy into the Midwest rock music scene.

“This is rock ’n’ roll for the purists,” lead guitarist Joshua Jordan said. “For the past few years, we’ve been refining our sound and finding our consistency. I’m proud of everything we’ve overcome and how it has brought us all together. This album really showcases that, and I’m excited to see where we can go from here.”

Paving the way for the current side of Pullstring to shine through are a few key older songs which received a facelift from their 2022 All I Know Is What I’ve Seen counterparts. “Bring on Tomorrow,” “When It Began,” and “Deadline” all feature increasingly more polished production and performances on Out with the Old, which features the band’s current lineup of Alex Fuller, Eric Braun, Will Keebler, and Jordan.

\Gone are the band’s more personal- and relationship-heavy sentiments splattered on their 2022 debut album; this time around they opted for driving dad rock-laden melodies that borderline on power pop. “Pull It!” and “What If,” were released earlier this year in preparation for the full record, offering plenty of tasty guitar licks and engaging melodies delivered in a tight sub-seven minutes.

“Pullstring is dad rock in the best way,” Fuller said. “We stumbled into that label by accident. I was talking with some of my younger college friends, and they described dad rock as bands who sound like Green Day and Weezer. And so we take those influences and modernize them to give people an up-to-date version of that style.”

While Pullstring calls the land of Prince home, they’ve made their name known throughout the Chippewa Valley thanks to performances at Volume One’s Sounds Like Concert Series the past two summers, alongside sweaty and energetic performances at local venues such as The Plus and the Mousetrap Tavern.

With their new album available now, the band is primed to head out on tour in the coming weeks, kicking off with a performance on Friday, Nov. 1, at The Plus in Eau Claire with local powerhouse, Motherwind.

Commenting on who Out with the Old might appeal to, lead singer Fuller said it best: “If you like rock ’n’ roll, this is for you.”
