Chetek native Christina Swans keeps dropping pop gems

A local artist is back to work after a disappointing setback. Blue Swans, a local power pop group, just released their new single “Talking Like a Shadow,” a powerful blend of electronic, pop, and rock sensibilities. The track perfectly blends the vocal stylings of artists such as Julien Baker with the captivating energy of modern indie rock powerhouses The 1975 and The Midnight.

The group released their debut EP “On My Own,” earlier this year, but their debut performance at The Plus in Eau Claire had to be canceled due to lead singer Christina Swans developing a sudden illness. A short time after this planned performance in March, the COVID-19 pandemic and all plans of touring had to be put on hold for the band.

Swans said “Talking Like a Shadow” encapsulates the mental state of the group post cancelation and trying to equip themselves to emerge from the coronavirus pandemic stronger than ever.

The meaning of the song came to me when we were shooting the music video. I think we captured the feeling of working toward something, feeling the disappointment of it not working out and then recovering after that.

MUSICIAN, BLUE SWANS

“The meaning of the song came to me when we were shooting the music video,” Swans said. “I think we captured the feeling of working toward something, feeling the disappointment of it not working out and then recovering after that.”

The duo of Swans and Blue Swans producer/guitarist Kyle Culver moved in with each other over the summer, and, since then, they’ve been doing nothing but writing and recording together.

“Since we didn’t get to play a show, we’ve just been putting a lot of demos in our back pocket, and this one stuck out more than the rest of them,” Culver said. “It’s one of those songs as a musician or artist you know will work because recording it just felt right.”

Blue Swans’ new song, “Talking Like a Shadow,” is available now on Spotify, Apple Music and all other major streaming services. An official music video for the song debuted on Nov. 20 and is viewable on YouTube. You can also find Blue Swans on Facebook.
