Koobmeej “Koobs” Xiong grew up in the perfect generation to start his own marketing and creative agency.

At just 21 years of age, this Gen-Zer started Xyooj Media, which helps local small businesses with content creation, social media, branding, and advertising. It’s no easy task. In a world dominated by TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Reddit – the list goes on – it can be a challenge to stand out.

“In today’s world, people’s attention spans are like, three to five seconds,” Xiong said, “and it’s actually going down now, believe it or not. So I mean, really, you have to grasp their attention within the first two, three seconds, I always say, otherwise they’re not going to care. And that’s very important in marketing and content creation.”

Xiong’s parents immigrated from Laos, and encouraged him to work hard and pursue a traditional career trajectory: go to college, get a degree, then get a job. After two years at UW-Eau Claire as a computer science-turned-graphic communications major, Xiong felt like the traditional path wasn’t going to cut it. “My parents knew it from probably the second I was born that I was 100% different,” he said with a laugh. “I hate following rules, I don’t like listening to other people, I take my own direction.”

When he was 10, Xiong picked up his dad’s old Sony point-and-shoot camera and fell in love with photography. At age 14, while his friends played video games or sports, he had his business plan ready. “The market is saturated with photographers,” he said. “The competition is definitely very, very high. So I had to figure out a way I could stand out by doing photography – still doing what I love – but also combining marketing, social media tactics, and stuff like that, so that I could help other small businesses grow.”

Xiong specializes in marketing high-end automobiles, combining his love for cars and his passion for photography, but he works with any locals who need help navigating the complex – and often overwhelming – media-based world.
