“Time & Tide” (2020) by Jen Schultz

Jen Schultz is an analog collage artist from Eau Claire also known as @robottraveler. Her work often oscillates between the intrinsic beauty found in nature and a slight obsession with retro-futurism.

All of my analog collage work begins with found images. Whether it’s vintage photos in books or illustrations from old magazines, I always start with a compelling image that makes me feel something. There may be a theme or certain subject matter from which I work, but ultimately the meaning of the finished piece is up for interpretation by the viewer.

Our interpretations are shaped by personal experience, nostalgia, even implicit associations – which I hope are challenged and questioned as you view my work. Oftentimes, the use of vintage subject matter can be challenging because many publications’ pasts are riddled with racism, bias, sexism and privilege. Reframing those images is an exciting and motivating part of my art-making process. Culture today is so image-saturated that I truly enjoy recycling found images to give them new life and meaning.”
