The L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library isn’t taking things too literally with its upcoming summer art show, “Figuratively Speaking,” which runs from June 10 until Aug. 28. “While we expect some artists will find inspiration in the human form, we usually see a wide spectrum of interpretation on the theme for our summer show,” said Isa Small, the library’s programming and communications services manager. “I’m sure this one will offer a variety of viewpoints to consider as well.” Small said many of the artists who will be featured have also had their work displayed during ArtsWest, the library’s annual juried exhibit. Artistic mediums include photography, painting, ceramics, fiber art, encaustics, and graphic design. There are only two rules to the summer exhibit: Pieces must be new, and artists may only submit one piece. Artists will be able to claim the art after the show, and the artwork will often go on display in other locations or will go for sale. The library will have a contact sheet for people interested in purchasing pieces, and all funds will go to the artists. “The library is committed to lifelong learning opportunities in a wide range of disciplines, including the humanities,” Small said. “Curating art exhibits that provide an opportunity for community members to experience and discuss art is one of the ways we serve that mission.” These summer art exhibits have been a staple of the library since 2003. “The library has roughly 1,200 visitors per day,” Small said. “So there is a unique opportunity to provide access to art on a relatively large scale.” An artists’ reception on will be 7-8pm on Thursday, June 13.
