If you’ve been in our office/store during the holidays, or heck, if you’ve even driven by, you can see that Volume One is fairly obsessed with Christmas decorations. Which really means I am obsessed with Christmas decorations. And as with many things, I blame my mom. When I was growing up, each Christmas she skillfully crafted our home into a series of picturesque vignettes that could have been ripped right from the pages of a holiday edition of Good Housekeeping. Multiple trees, plentiful evergreen boughs, white lights and candles, fragrant gingerbread spreads, meticulously arranged cookie platters – all done with a warm, timeless elegance that has apparently stuck with me 30 years later. So you take that, plus my father’s endless work ethic, and you get me going deep on decorating The Local Store and V1 each year for our customers and staff. It’s not cheap, of course – but I view it all as an investment in our business and brand. Or at least that’s what I tell the staff (and my wife) when I drag in yet another pre-lit wreath or vintage toboggan to put in the store. While these things certainly all up the festive factor around our office, they truly do pay off in the long run as our reputation hopefully builds as a must-visit local holiday shopping experience. Plus, who doesn’t love it when the holiday hangover arrives in that first week of January and you have to spend multiple cold, dark, overcast days taking all that crap down? Totally worth it, right? Right?!
