Bang the Drum

Minneapolis taiko experts come to Menomonie

The intensity and precision of taiko drumming is something that everyone should see in his or her lifetime. The Japanese style of drumming is fast and booming, with huge, hollow drums reverberating through whatever space they are played in – taiko actually means “wide drum” in Japanese. Usually the compositions slowly build up into a frenzy of many drums being hit strongly, yet with dead-on precision, creating an almost overwhelming wash of sound and rhythm. Mu Daiko – a Taiko drumming group now based in Minneapolis – is bringing that raw energy and power to the Mabel Tainter Center For The Arts in Menomonie on May 11. Mu Daiko was founded by Rick Shiomi, who began his taiko career in 1971 in Vancouver and played around the United States and Canada before settling in Minneapolis. Mu Daiko presented its first concert in October 1997. At the shows, Mu Daiko plays both traditional taiko pieces and contemporary pieces, some of which are originals composed by its members and expand the traditional art forms of taiko into the modern era. Throughout the year the group stays busy performing and teaching, often with more than 100 performances per year. The Mabel Tainter show is a perfect opportunity to engage in the taiko style and see, hear, and feel the immense power of taiko drumming.
