William Schulman doesn’t want to just paint a picture of Lake Menomin or describe it physically. In Schulman’s newest book, 97 Views of Lake Menomin, the retired UW-Stout art professor strives for the essence of the location, where the sky is as important as the water, which is as important as the traffic behind it which is all less important than the emotions that are felt by being in that place at that time. “The 97 views are really scribbles,” Schulman said, explaining that he was trying to show the water, but not copy it directly. 97 Views – which is Schulman’s third book – seeks to capture this essence with a blend of paintings and poetry collected over the past decades. “The book is a history of my development as and artist and teacher concentrating on place, which was here in Menomonie.” And while his background is in the visual arts, Schulman said he’s always been a writer. Schulman will be reading excerpts of his poetry at the Janet Carson Gallery at The State Theatre on Oct. 4 from 6pm-7pm with a visual display of matching artwork. He’ll also have books for sale and will be signing them.
