It’s the weekend. You’ve been at the bars, and you’re hungry. Where to go? If you’re gracing Broadway Street in Menomonie, the only logical answer would be Teddy’s Tube Steaks (617 S Broadway). We’ve heard a lot about this quirky eatery and its equally quirky owner, so we had to check it out for ourselves. The menu is fairly humble, tube steaks or pretzels with your choice of cheese, chili, or both. But these are no ordinary tube steaks, they’re the same hot dogs that are served at both Miller Park and Lambeau Field, but for a much more reasonable price. Even more interesting is that Teddy only opens his doors from midnight to 3am on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. And Teddy doesn’t just serve up a tube steak, he gives a full experience. While there’s only enough room in this tiny shop to order and add condiments, you have to check out the vending machine that is stocked with late-night “essentials” such as soda, Doritos, cough syrup, beads, and “protection.” Teddy is a Stout graduate himself, and has been a Chippewa Valley resident for most of his life. Like any good small shop owner, he has a quick sense of humor and a sharp tongue, so next time you’re feeling the urge for tube steak, head to Menomonie and try Teddy’s. But don’t forget your spoon or napkin, “the spoon because you don’t want to miss a drop, and the napkin because you will.”
