Governor elect Scott Walker has vowed to squash high speed rail, but – legally – can he? Yes, through two different scenarios. He could simply refuse to authorize the annual funding needed to operate a train, which would make initial spending futile. Or he could cancel the contracts with companies who have already signed on to build trains and supply materials. So, with the real specter of a nonexistent train overhead, seven Wisconsin cities held pro-train rallies on Saturday, Nov. 20, including a local rally held at Phoenix Park that attracted 50 supporters. In addition, the Eau Claire City Council passed a resolution (10-0) on Nov. 23 that backs the state project, reiterating their desire to see jobs and progress come our way. The signed form will be sent to the governor-elect’s office, who takes the reigns Jan. 3.
