On July 14 at DeLong Middle School, local breakdancers the Floor Dusters Crew are teaming up with the Eau Claire Hip-Hop and B-Boy/B-Girl Association to put on the Valley’s first official b-boy jam, Lay Da Breaks. At a jam, a beat pounds and the crowd encourages dancers to challenge one-another. The springing, rhythmic movements require athleticism and have names like Jackhammer, Cricket, and Applejacks. Floor Dusters Crew b-boy Tony Lor explained that “Clean execution, dynamics … difficulty of the move, musicality (beat hitting), and creativity,” are the criteria judges use to determine a winner. Lay Da Breaks isn’t only a competition. According to the association’s founder, Tyler Franz, aka Breakneck the Mage, crews and individual b-boys and b-girls will also take part in “ciphers” or small-circle dance sessions. Music provided by live DJs will keep the crowd bumpin’ at the free all-ages event from 3-10pm. “We are looking for anyone and everyone who has even had a second thought about breakdancing to come out and get involved,” Franz said.
