Unwind Gets Hot with Chill

Alex Galston |

Doing hip-hop reviews means you get all manner of CDs with the letters DJ on the cover. So I was surprised when I put in the new DJ Unwind EP Far From Here and heard “chill” music coming out of my speakers instead of bass and beats and raps about a poorly knit sweater. Chill music is only generally heard in one of three situations: on a lazy Sunday when you want to pretend you’re in a CW drama while you’re reading the paper and drinking coffee, in either a chain or urban coffee shop that wants to be hip, or when you bring a person home and think putting on Marvin Gaye would be too forward. That being said, the album is in fact quite good. The songs flow from one into the next smoothly, and have a vibe reminiscent of Air’s Moon Safari. DJ Unwind, a former Chippewa Vallian now in Minneapolis, has been getting a lot of positive press lately, and with high-caliber work like this it’s easy to see why. I would recommend it to anyone who owns a coffee shop, is looking to soundtrack their Sunday, or have a late night rendezvous anytime.
