It's Intergalactic!
one-of-a-kind science fiction radio-play comes to town
The Intergalactic Nemesis, a widely appealing science fiction radio-play, will be crash-landing on the State Theatre’s stage. The format of this Austin-spawned drama will be unconventional: actors and actresses will read from scripts into vintage microphones on stands. Both the format and the subject matter will hearken back to the days of radio cliffhangers, relying heavily on the art of noisemaking. Perhaps most appealing of all, audience members will be able to witness this sound making in action. “Foley artists” will be banging and clanging not behind a curtain, but in plain view. “It’s a funky, hip, sci-fi show for the whole family,” said Ben Richgruber, executive director of Eau Claire Regional Arts Center and The State Theatre. “It’s Flash Gordon meets The Incredibles meets Indiana Jones.” Besides the obvious antiquated charm, the play offers a no-holds-barred plot, which has expanded into a trilogy over its 12-year lifespan. In general, the story follows Pulitzer-prize winning journalist Molly Sloan and her assistant Timmy Mendez after they receive a tip from a time-traveler that Earth will be invaded by the Zygonians. Of course, they must travel through time and galaxies to investigate and pre-empt the attack. All in all, the act of looking at the future through “vintage glasses” (think robots from the 1950s) is what keeps audiences across the nation rollicking.
