Eau Claire GI Associates (ECGI) was one of the City’s original gastroenterology providers when it opened in 1988, and more than 30 years later, the team has sharpened it’s expertise and expanded its service range. Offering the whole gamut of gastrointestinal procedures, Eau Claire GI Associates serves as Western Wisconsin’s go-to independent experts.

Part of the Oakleaf Medical Network, ECGI has furthered its service reach from Eau Claire to Baldwin, Chippewa Falls, Durand, and Stanley. Maintaining their independent status, the office is agile and open-minded when treating patients, able to consider alternative and nontraditional therapies, conservative and evidence-based medicine, while offering more aggressive, highly-effective treatments for hospitalized patients.

The national physician shortage is felt throughout the field, especially in the GI specialty — yet ECGI has continued to grow. Its team of two board-certified full-time gastroenterologists, Drs. Paul Ruh and Jon Potter, service multiple sites alongside two personable, board-certified nurse practitioners, Molly Boyle-Engedal and Tabetha Patrow. In October 2024, the team will welcome another talented gastroenterologist and transition to a new adjacent space in Eau Claire in spring 2024.

“Patients that enjoy coming here find it’s so much easier to talk to a nurse on the phone who they just met at the clinic and know. With a small staff, you’ll get to know at least one of us if not all of us and that gives you a better relationship with your practitioner,” Dr. Ruh explained. “Because of our expertise and diagnostics, Oakleaf Clinics, such as Eau Claire Medical and Pine Grove, and Prevea predominantly refer to us. Patients can feel lost in bigger healthcare systems; we take pride in dedicated care to all of our patients.”

Eau Claire GI Associates’ services include colonoscopy, upper endoscopy, advanced bile duct endoscopy, stone therapy, esophageal manometry, small bowel pill camera studies, and hemorrhoid banding, several of which are not available elsewhere in the Chippewa Valley. “We feel we are truly unique, in both approach and ability,” Dr. Ruh said.

Part of that small-town approach is the face-to-face personal attention offered at ECGI. The team has practically heard it all, especially in their field. “There are the ‘guts and butts’ jokes in the GI field, but I know how scary and frustrating it can be when you barely have five minutes with your doctor and have to discuss uncomfortable things,” Dr. Potter explained. “I tell people, ‘This is all in a day’s work’ for us. Everyone benefits from uninhibited communication.”

“The important thing is, when someone walks out our front doors, they should have something: more information, a plan, medication or just reassurance; something beneficial,” Dr. Potter continued. “We aim for high-quality, efficient, economical, patient focused diagnostic and preventative care.”

Eau Claire GI Associates continues to be chosen by patients over and over again, thanks to its experience and genuine personalized care.

“The first tenet in healthcare is to do no harm, so we use evidence-based treatment but are willing to go the extra mile to explore options. Patients will have the choice to see any of our five providers. They choose how they want to approach their concerns; we are here to inform them of the science and technologies that are locally available to them,” Dr. Potter said.
