A heroine's journey of a woman who dies on her wedding day, Eurydice must journey to the underworld – where she persists through the struggles to remember her lost love and reconnect with family.
"Eurydice," the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's latest production by the music and theatre arts department, unveils this narrative and more; the production ran from March 5-8 in the JAMF Theatre at the Pablo Center at the Confluence (128 Graham Ave., Eau Claire).
This reimagining of the timeless story in mythology – written by Sarah Ruhl and directed by UW-Eau Claire faculty member Arthur Groethe – features contemporary characters, plot twists, and "a script written to be a playground for designers, the play is a fresh look at a timeless love story."
Over the course of the production, both Eurydice and Orpheus resist the temptations to be "classical" and the underworld resembles more of an Alice in Wonderland landscape more than it resembles Hades, Ruhl writes.
