Flu Season in the Valley: Here’s What You Need to Know
getting a flu shot will protect you and your family
Eau Claire City-County Health Department |
Getting the flu vaccine every year is important, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. While it is not possible to say for certain what will happen this fall and winter, it is likely that influenza (flu) viruses and COVID-19 will be spreading. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is possible to have the flu as well as other respiratory illnesses or COVID-19 at the same time. Even though getting a flu shot will not protect you from COVID-19, it can lower your risk of becoming seriously ill from the flu.
What the flu shot can do for you:
- Keep you from getting sick with flu.
- Lower your risk of serious flu illness and flu complications, including hospitalization and death.
- Help you get back on your feet sooner if you do get sick with the flu.
- Help protect the people around you, including those who are more vulnerable to serious flu illness and complications.
- Protect women during and after pregnancy.
Actions to take to keep you and your family healthy this year:
- Make sure everyone in your family 6 months and older gets their flu shot.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Cover your coughs and sneezes.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water frequently.
- Follow public health advice regarding stay-at-home orders and other social distancing measures. (Visit covid19eauclaire.org for updated information.)
- Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a face mask.
- Stay informed. See CDC.gov for up-to-date information about COVID-19 and influenza.
