National Nutrition Month: Eat Right, Bite by Bite

Eau Claire City-County Health Department |

Most experts agree: Healthy eating doesn’t need to be complicated. Unfortunately, endless food options at the grocery store and easy access to never-ending information on the Internet can make it feel complicated! You have probably heard it before: Avoid fad diets. Stick with a few simple and sustainable changes that most health professionals agree will promote a long, happy, and healthy life.

Balance your diet with foods from all food groups.

Fill half of your plate with colorful fruits and vegetables. The other half of your plate should consist of whole grains and lean protein such as fish, skinless chicken breast, or beans. Also don’t forget to add a serving of low-fat dairy to your meal.

Get moving.

Sit less today. Any physical activity is better than none, so find something that you enjoy and can do often. Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity five days per week. Physical activity may help lower blood pressure and help control weight.

Be well.

Find healthier ways to manage stress. This could include yoga, walking, or meditation. “Healthy eating and being physically active are key to lifelong health,” says Janessa VandenBerge, a community health educator with the Eau Claire City-County Health Department. “Healthy eating and being physically active lowers your risk of chronic diseases, including Type 2 diabetes, cancer, heart disease, stroke, and obesity.”

March is National Nutrition Month, the time of an annual campaign highlighting the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. In addition, National Nutrition Month celebrates registered dietitian nutritionists as the food and nutrition experts. For reliable nutrition information, visit eatright.org.
