Bizarre History: Police called to rid house of ghosts (1906)
Ask Police To Rid House Of Ghosts
Eau Claire Leader | March 1, 1906
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Berg believe that their home is haunted and have asked the police to catch the ghosts. They claim that furniture is moved from one part of their home to the other, where they are temporarily, and no one is ever seen about the house. Watches and jewelry, also money is never touched.
Chad’s Take: Who ya gonna to call? The police.
Long before every town was filled with ghost hunting groups, residents had no choice but to contact the police in matters of the supernatural. Police were routinely called out to check on mysterious creatures, haunted homes, and illegally operating psychics. In my previous posts I have talked about the Eau Claire police chasing an alleged wild panther-like creature, trying to catch the giant black snake plaguing Water Street, and responding to reports of a night phantom that was busy terrifying the women of Eau Claire.
With so much paranormal activity happening in the Chippewa Valley, it is amazing that the police had any time left over to deal with all of the town drunkards, which leads me to my next point – I am still trying to determine if the abovementioned Charles Berg is the same Charles Berg who two years earlier in 1904, made the newspaper when the Eau Claire Leader reported that he had brought his wife and three children into town and made them sit in his wagon for hours as he frequented several local saloons. Berg had staggered out of the saloons long enough to inform his wife that she ought to just go on home without him because he wasn’t going to be finished drinking until morning. If this was indeed the same Charles Berg, perhaps his home was haunted by spirits, just not the ghostly ones.
Keep an eye out …
