In Wisconsin this week: Moveable Type mobile workshop

For many hardworking individuals out there, work and play are two separate things. For Kyle Durrie, they are one and the same. A letterpress printer from Portland, Oregon who is inspired by “wobbly lines, history, overheard conversations, logs, and whiskey” – among other things – has hatched a plan which involves a 9-month road trip in a 1982 Chevy step van, teaching willing people how to print “the old-fashioned way.” She calls it Moveable Type.

Of course, this all sounds very whimsical and unrealistic. How, you may be wondering, did she gather enough dough? (Especially with gas nearly 4 bucks a gallon.)

In November 2010, she began a fundraising campaign through Kickstarter.com. Durrie was met with overwhelming support, doubling her original financial goal. “Moveable Type” was born. Since that time, she outfitted a van into a “fully functional letterpress print shop” and has been on the road since June, with a pretty impressive docket of cities to visit.

Visit her site to learn more and/or to make a donation … and to lament the fact that she never came to Eau Claire, though the van's been in Wisconsin all week!
