Saturday: 2011 Sustainability Fair
If you enjoy a good fair, but also want to learn something, I’ve got the event for you! Sustainable Dunn is hosting its third annual West Wisconsin Sustainability Fair this summer, with a focus on water issues.
What to expect when you arrive? Well, if you were at the 2008 fair, you probably treated yourself to some cookies baked by solar power, or possibly enjoyed “Watch Swan”, a giant swan sculpture made entirely from Mississippi River refuse and foam. Awesome.
This year, however, they’re shaking things up a bit, placing the most emphasis on the Red Cedar Watershed – including water quality problems related to phosphorus in the Red Cedar River Basin. The fair will feature exhibitors from business, government, and non-profit groups, with a ton of speakers, workshops, music, energy efficient vehicles, children’s activities, and a tour of the Cedar Falls Dam. But I’m not even done yet: the fair will also include presentations about rain gardens, wetlands, shoreline restoration, and research on blue-green algae (which, as we all know, is a hot issue right now).
Plus, local musicians will be performing throughout the day.
Oh, and there’s a photo contest! If you’re thinking of entering, submit photos that show interpretations of water and what it means to you, your community, your health, your happiness, and, of course, your personal artistic vision.
The fair will take place on July 16 at the Dunn County Fairgrounds from 8am-2pm. All ages are welcome! For more info, please visit Sustainable Dunn’s website.
